POB=ID theft insurance
The story of the 1st American flag is here
POB's: THE BEST INSURANCE POLICY YOU CAN BUY DIRT CHEAP.
Many experts in ID theft now say the number one way to protect your self against ID theft felons is to use a post office box for ALL your mail, and get ZERO mail delivered to your home address.
When ID thieves know your name, and can match that to your home address, and get they other ID info they need to steal your money, using credit reports or other easily available government data bases. Having a POB in the next town over, near where you shop weekly creates a firewall of confusion for ID theft, and usually sends the bad guys on to an easier target.
Getting mail sent to your first names, first letter only e.g. J Smith pob 123 Camp Hill PA 17011 And NOT John Smith pob 123 subverts criminals even more, because now they can't tell which J Smith you are.
The zip plus 4 address of your pob address is a great ink stamp to put on all your mail because
J Smith 17011-0123 is all that's needed to E-route mail to your pob.
USPS and private postal POB's (that have a street address for UPS/FEDEX deliveries only cost $25-100 a year, just a few hundredths of a percent of the financial assets ID thieves can steal if they can get your street data.
1 pob with USPS and 1 private postal mail box with a street address is ideal. If your on a state border a pob over the state line confuses thieves and government even more. A pob near your vacation home or timeshare in a far away state is the perfect address for accounts you can get statements by email and no mail goes to your out of state box. Confusing the bad guys is the key.
Everyone with financial assets in banks or investment accounts esp. those with over 50k is a potential target of ID thieves and should consider using a pob for ALL their mail. Using a pob address all financial statements and for all tax returns keeps your name and address out of millions of data bases, and somewhat protected from illegal government misuse of your data.
Most tax professionals who have decades of experience will tell you that if all your tax affairs are filed from a pob, AND your and work address are out of data bases you are far less likely to be bothered by the IRS.
This is because a pob address requires a more difficult "where's Waldo" search to find your physical location for any enforcement action or audits. No hardening of you as a target tactic, even pob mail, is a foolproof guarantee the IRS won't make the extra effort to find you and ruin your day if you owe Uncle big bucks. However, for small taxpayers under 500k of income it's a pretty good tactic to make a lazy field agent to skip you and go to the next person on their list.
Having a pob and using it in the above described manner in perfectly legal when your motive is to prevent Id theft or IRS harassment of your life or business.
Think of POB's as getting a German Shepherd watchdog for your information.
Any bad guys will need to be smart enough to show up with a raw NY strip steak to seduce your watchdog, and really, how many bad guys are that smart????
Finally, getting your name and home address out of all computer data bases and only your pob takes time. It took me a year until my credit report showed only my past addresses. So get a pob, or better yet 2 POB's (one for packages if you love eBay and mail order like my wife) ASAP and get started.
